Twenty years ago, Susan Archer witnessed the brutal murder of her beloved twin brother. Now, the murderer, Devin McCree, has returned. Although Devin is a “Deathwalker,” Susan soon discovers that he is not the monster she has feared for so long. Leaving her old life behind, she joins Devin on his run from a crazed vampire hunter. Unwilling to let his love disappear, Michael soon follows. Can Michael save Susan? Does she even need or want to be saved? “Darklands A Vampire’s Tale” is a violent tale of survival, bloodlust , and two people trying to hang on to the last shreds of their humanity, while teetering on the edge of immortality. “Darklands A Vampire’s Tale” is the first volume in the Darklands Vampire series.

So 2-ish stars has this weird look about it that makes others think, “It must’ve sucked,” but that’s not the case with this one. It was interesting; compelling, even.

Susan Archer suffers some pretty terrible tragedies as a teenager by having her small family ripped from her and then again 20 years later. The first time, it was at the hands of Devin McCree. The second time, it was the hands of Devin McCree that saved both her life and Michael’s, her boyfriend.

Devin McCree fancies himself a Deathwalker. That’s right, he’s a vampire. No secret there. (It’s in the title.) But they’re not like normal vampires. Actually, they’re barely vampires at all. The only thing that separates these vampires from humans was a ridiculous impossibility to kill (unless the head was removed) and a hunger for blood. They were warm, their hearts beat and at one point a Deathwalker who gets their chest sliced open (just a scratch) actually requires stitches. Not a merit in my book.

Aside from insanely humane vampirism, the dark and dank atmosphere of the novel kept me enthralled from the get-go. Burgess’ prose is straightforward and twice as bleak as the scenes it depicts, so palpable that the darkness is choking half the time. I have a feeling this book will stay with me for some time to come.

Reading the sequel? Prolly. So 2.5 stars. It was good.

Darklands A Vampire Tale Donna Burgess 9780982966518 Books Reviews

This book was filled with suspense, sex, and violence. I didn't want to put it down. However...Is there more? There must be a sequel, please there must be more!
This book sounded so promising from the description, but it's one of the worst books I've ever read. The first 1/4 of the book was filled with typos, missing words, sentence fragments and I almost stopped reading it. I wish I had because there is no plot, no climax, no conclusions. The story consists of pain, gore, lust, more pain, more gore, lust, lust, lust. The gore was disgusting. I didn't like any of the main characters except for the 1 good guy and he's a minor character. I'm glad I didn't spend any money on it, but even with it being free, it was a waste of my valuable reading time.
As a horror purist, I insist that vampires be scary. And that's exactly what I got in reading Darklands. It is tough, gritty and you won't be able to put it down. It isn't for Twilight followers, but that's okay. Donna Burgess stays true to what vampires are supposed to be scary, seductive and just a little bit nasty.
Well yes it is a good story but I was about to pull my hair out at the end. It's got good suspense and seems to me like a cross between "Day walkers" and "I am legend"... there has to be a sequel to this because there are too many unanswered questions... all the good guys die, or do they?, will Devin keep running away from Kasper or is he going to confront him and do what he needs to do?, is Susan going to stay with Devin or is she going to regret her decision?... Arrrrggggg... I'm telling you, darn frustrating but would I recommend it?... yes, just make sure to remember it's not the end of the story.
I really liked this story. The author took me into the minds of the characters. Susan Archer is a fascinating character, not romanticized, but gritty and real. I overlooked typos and misused words because the story is compelling. I hope the next Burgess book I read addresses this.
This is not your typical vampire romance book but i still really liked it. Susan is a cop who has not aged in 20 years due to Devin biting her when she was younger. He saved her life when she was young and than later by accident took her twin brother from her. Devin stays in the shadows for 20 years watching her before he comes back for her and turns her. But not all is happy when they have a nazi vampire hunter after them. I am looking forward to the next book"
I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters were brought to life early on. I was quickly drawn in and the story definitely made me want to keep reading. But, and this is a HUGE but ... I really disliked weeding through too many misspelled and misused words. Words are important to me and I found that the overwhelming quantity of these errors would pull me right out of the story due to frustration during the reading experience.

All in all, I enjoyed her writing and would love to follow along as their journey continues.
